Past Is Prologue in China

This session will explore the ways in which China and Europe are presently interconnected. Between the Belt and Road Initiative, China’s dealings with the EU, and its growing economy, what are the realistic paths forward? How ought we to foresee the CCCP’s human rights abuses, including persecution of the Uighurs and other religious communities, impact its relationships with the West? Will missteps in Taiwan or Hong Kong strain or even upend global trade, particularly with the US and Europe? And how are these current realities rooted in and shaped by historical and religious forces?
