Religion & Race: A Historical & Contemporary Perspective

From the December 2008 Forum in Key West, Florida

Dr. Eddie S. Glaude, Jr., William S. Tod Professor of Religion & African American Studies, Princeton University

In theory, the United States is based on a tradition of religious pluralism, tolerance and diversity of practice. Dr. Eddie Glaude, Jr. questions that assumption and contextualizes the debate within American history. He takes us back to the nation’ s beginnings, continues to the early 20th century during continued African American segregation, and brings us to the present, examining how religion should be discussed in the public sphere. He speaks to the current societal position of African American churches and emphasizes that Barack Obama’ s election has great historic significance, marking the beginning of an era of new racial integration and understanding.
