About the Forum

Faith Angle West brings together leading West Coast and other US journalists for engaging discussions led by premier scholars on critical issues to help bridge the gap between religion and journalism.

This forum, the first of its kind (since most Faith Angle gatherings since 1999 have gathered East Coast journalists), convened 18 journalists and five speakers in Napa, CA, for two days of rich conversation on polarization, race & religion in America, and technology.

Jean Twenge
San Diego State University

Jean Twenge, Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University, is the author of more than 140 scientific publications and the books iGen: Why Today’s Super-Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy–and Completely Unprepared for AdulthoodGeneration Me: Why Today’s Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled — and More Miserable Than Ever Before and The Narcissism EpidemicLiving in the Age of Entitlement (co-authored with W. Keith Campbell). Dr. Twenge frequently gives talks and seminars on teaching and working with today’s young generation based on a dataset of 11 million young people. Her audiences have included college faculty and staff, high school teachers, military personnel, camp directors, and corporate executives. Her research has been covered in TimeNewsweekThe New York TimesUSA TodayU.S. News and World Report, and The Washington Post, and she has been featured on Today, Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, Fox and Friends, NBC Nightly News, Dateline NBC, and National Public Radio. Esau McCaulley
Wheaton College

Fr. Esau McCaulley, PhD is an assistant professor of New Testament at Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL. His first book entitled Sharing in the Son’s Inheritance was published by T & T Clark in 2019. His second book Reading While Black: African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope was published by IVP academic.  He is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times. His writings have also appeared in Washington Post and Christianity Today among other places.  He is married to Mandy, a pediatrician and navy reservist. Together, they have four wonderful children.

Eugene Scott
Washington Post

Eugene Scott is a national political reporter on the Washington Post’s breaking news team. He previously wrote about identity politics for The Fix as well as hosted “The Next Four Years” podcast. Prior to joining the Post, Scott was a Washington correspondent at CNN Politics. He has been a multi-media journalist for two decades across the country. His work has appeared in USA Today, TIME Magazine, Newsweek, NPR, MSNBC, and more. In that time, Scott has won multiple awards and fellowships for his work specifically related to covering politics, business, and education. He was previously a fellow at the Georgetown University Institute of Politics.

Andrew Hanauer
One America

Andrew Hanauer is the President and CEO of the One America Movement, a national nonprofit confronting toxic polarization in our society. The One America Movement equips faith communities to confront division and work together across political, racial, and religious divides to solve problems that matter. Andrew frequently speaks to these issues to leaders, journalists, and at houses of worship of all kinds. During his career, he has also spoken at the United Nations, the National Press Club, and Congressional briefings. His work has been published or featured by USA Today, The Washington PostNational Public Radio, Salon, The Times of IsraelVoice of America, the Christian Citizen, and media outlets across the US and abroad.

Brian Hook
Stand Together

Brian Hooks is chairman and CEO of Stand Together, a philanthropic community that works with more than 700 business leaders and philanthropists to empower people to realize their unique potential and help every person rise.  Stand Together’s comprehensive approach to addressing the country’s biggest challenges includes support for more than 1,000 professors at over 300 universities, tens of thousands of K-12 teachers, more than 200 community-based organizations addressing persistent poverty, and millions of grassroots activists working to improve public policy.  Previously, he served as executive director and COO of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, where he led strategy and operations for a growing research, education, and public policy center. He is co-author of the book, Believe in People: Bottom Up Solutions for a Top Down World , a national bestseller published in November 2020 by St. Martin’s Press. Brian was named to the 2021 TIME100 Next list, featuring leaders who are shaping the future of their fields. Brian serves on the boards of the Mercatus Center, Institute for Humane Studies, Reason Foundation and the Just Trust. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife and daughter.
