The Embattled American Cleric
American religiosity is undeniably shaped by those who lead it. Do the country’s 470,000 clerics routinely preach on politically sensitive topics, or purposefully avoid politics in the sermon? How do their views about faith impact views of mental health, euthanasia, or technology? Initially rooted in 2019-20 surveys, the newly published National Survey of Religious Leaders (NSRL) offers a wealth of new findings about the habits, commitments, and questions being raised across the religious spectrum. Looking carefully at clergy job satisfaction, health, and political views, Mark Chaves, Duke’s Scott Distinguished Professor of Sociology, who directed the NSRL, will discuss the survey with Yonat Shimron, who has covered religion for over 20 years as national reporter and senior editor at Religion News Service.
